Graduate Hugging Mother

Information for 2026-2027 scholarship.

The Melrose-Wakefield Area Branch of the American Association of University Women is pleased to offer two scholarships for the 2026-2027 academic year.

The branch scholarship, which is in the amount of $1,500.00, is available as a result of the fundraising activities of the branch and donations received in memory of branch members and their loved ones. This year, the branch scholarship will be given in memory of Edna Beaton, late of Melrose, who passed away in April 2023.  Edna was a graduate of Malden High School, and she received her Bachelor’s degree from Tufts University, where she majored in French.  She also studied at L’Ecole de Francais at Middlebury College. She was a teacher of several languages, an avid golfer, an enthusiastic traveler, and a sports fan.  She was a member of AAUW for decades and was also active in the Beethoven Society of Melrose, Friends of the Melrose Symphony Orchestra, and the Trinity Church Altar Guild.

The other scholarship, which is in the amount of $1,200.00 is offered from the Diana L. Goldblith Scholarship Fund, which was established by donations from Mrs. Goldblith’s family and friends following her sudden death in June 1990.  Mrs. Goldblith, a longtime Melrose resident, was an active and enthusiastic participant in AAUW’s Literature Group, Great Decisions Group, and Stellar Investment Club.

To be eligible, one must be a resident of Melrose, Wakefield, North Reading, Georgetown, Wilmington, Cambridge, Saugus, or Georgetown, Maine.  These are all communities from which the branch derives members this year.  In addition, one must attend or be a graduate of a four-year AAUW-accredited college or university and must have completed at least two years of study prior to the fall of 2026.

Special consideration will be given to applicants who have maintained high academic standing and can demonstrate a need for the scholarship for a specific purpose related to educational goals.  All applications will be processed anonymously.

Applications are available here: AAUW Application 2026 and must be returned by April 17, 2026. The recipient of the scholarship will be notified prior to May 13, 2026.
